thanksgiving hunt

celebrating thanksgiving a week early, we will be away from home.
shane heading out hunting, a Maine Tradition
i spent the day cooking, i wonder every year when the day is over, why do we celebrate with FOOD? it just does't add up. feeling full, and crashing from a sugar high, ughghghg, if anyone has ever seen my dinner plate you would under stand. i rarely balance my plate, sweet potatoes, lots of cranberry relish, cranberry salad, a tiny portion of veggies, and bring on the pudding pie, lemon custard, and apple/cran/ginger pie with vanilla ice cream. save the turkey and left over bread for tomarrow!
any way we have so much to be thankful for. Praise God for his provisions, his blessings, his delight in us, and His promises.

after they had their fill of shooting i put them to work picking berries! we got 4 huge berry buckets of yellow salmon berries. oops no photos, it was getting dark. anyway i'll be making marmalade this weekend. these were the bigget berries ever! almost the size of golf balls! and the bushes were as tall as me! it was so cool.

The morning after a great day.
So the theory is... if you don't have your camera you'll see it.
WOW did we.
Started our day off late, couldn't drag Spencer out of bed, sang happy birthday to Michelle, and the morning crept on.
So we left in a big hurry to go fishing. It was fairly still out, so once in the boat we canned fishing and headed over King Cove for Chinease and fellowship.
It was beautiful!!
shopped at the thrift shop, got an old shirt i hope to make an apron out of, inspired by Glenora, enjoyed a meal cooked by someone else, Shane got the D2 he has been craving (only to admit he likes my chix chow mein) then went up to the church and watched them trnsform the church with decorations for Vacation Bible School! Looks like they will have a great week.
went grocery shopping! Rob bought me some bananas! Spencer treated me to a Slush Puppy!! it truely felt like a summer treat. brought back a few groceries!
we were nevous toget going in case the winds picked up, but it was a splendid ride back, we stopped at several "fishing holes" along the way.
Shane caught a huge sting ray, i didn't even know we had them here! also dragged up lots of sea cucumbers, yuck, the sculpin out there are prettier than the ones we usually catch too. we did get a couple of haliut to keep.
that was our great adventure.

Carol this is for you. I am still just as excited about this part of canning, as last year when it was all new... after removing the salmon from the pressure cooker ( 110 minutes a 10lbs of pressure at 240degrees) and after cooling down for half hour before able to open pressurized lid... they are still boiling on the counter for like another half hour.. it's really cool, and it's usually at like 1am in the morning...

This was todays reading in My Utmost for His highest, by Oswald Chambers. i've been reading it for years, over and over on and off....

Sometimes i get caught up in missing my friends who are away. instead of lifting them up in prayer.

couple of weeks ago we got takeout ( for those of you who don't know what that means for us, it is from the closest town with chinese, a 20 minute flight away) anyway my cookie said something along the lines of seeking advise from longtime friendships, Lucretia pointed out to me that can mean new friends intended to be long term, not necessarily ones i have had a long time. Again i was guilty of dweling in the past. i know from experience i have close friends that remain close and dear to my heart no matter the time in between visits, talks, or communicating.

a call i received today(here in alaska) reminded me of this. Shanon stopped by the house(maine one) to barrow something and called us from there... it was great.

So i will be more faithful to lift all my friends up in prayer to the Lord, who delights me daily with relationships He provides me with. I am truely blessed with great friends!

I am putting a cry out there to you though, to send me photos of you and your familys. i would like that.

sun setting about 11:30ish i started the day singing "Bless the Lord..." out in the boat before sunrise, 6:00ish, pulling halibut out (95lber) and omlets in the cabin!! fresh halibut for lunch and out for a 4 wheeler ride!! this was the ride back! ended the day singing "this is the day that the Lord has made" so much to be thankful for!!! i'll post more later, goin' out bear viewing before sunset tonight.

after tesing the kayak out in the pond, (we mde a small sail for it) and testing out our equipment (a little quick swim in our dry suits) we stopped by the dock on the way back to town..... Shane jumped in cause he is crazy, while i watched from the inside of the truck, that how cold and windy it was, ten he rinsed off........brrrrrr

This is what we came home to after a great crab dinnr at our friends house! we were already feeling so blessed for an evening with our friends, and so thankful for their freindship. we found this in our house when we got home! to fill those of you in who don't quite understand yet, these two items have to travel 700 miles to get here. Finds out friends of ours were traveling through our town to KingCove, and God used them to bless, delight and encourage us with yet another friendship we cherish.

Maple syup sunday

a cold winter walk, oh wait its spring. the sun did stay out for several hours and made our walk delightful. the bitter wind kept us bundled up, but it felt nice anyway. lots of fun surprises, a pretty cross fox caught our attention and we followed him for quite some distance. an otter delighted us as it hopped across the tundra, a silly vole made us laugh.

my third Maple Syrup Sunday celebrated away from Maine. i will never miss a maine tradition! ah and this year i added an element! my 2nd favorite thing banana bread... made into french toast and smothered in maine maple syrup. i can't take the credit for this idea, but when i saw the recipe i could believe i had never thought of it. my favorite thing to have maple syrup on(besides icecream) and made out of my most favorite bread! http://www.wheatfoods.org/Banana-Bread-French-Toast.51.1.htm

the recipe came from Wheat Foods Council.

for those of you who know i'm not much of a cook, of course i didn't follow the recipe, it's the idea thats important. my banana bread isn't quite a typical one, considering i drop the sugar and oil in tradidtional recipes, but the latest thing i've been using is mace for seasoning... i hapen to have it because it is in one of my fish brine recipes, anyway the latest tin i bought had several uses for the spice i would never had tried....

saturday morning, wow we got to see the sunrise. it's a big deal because it has been the coldest of the entire winter this past week. temperatures in the teens and winds averaging in 30's. and snow... ugh. St.Patricks Day was fun. i did a delivery of muffins to all the places of work in town. of couse they were healthy, and i passed out health information on "eating the rainbow" for national nutrition month, and "discovering a pot of gold" in the phytochemial pot of fruits and vegetables. eating nutriosously here is a challenge given we get a barge every two weeks and fresh food may be frozen and damaged, and very expensive, not allowing you to just purchase anything you want. so i try to encourage people and hopefully give ideas of ways to be healthy and care for our bodies. anyway we also had a dinner get together which was fun, Lucretia colored the mashed potatoes green and that brought me down memory lane... spinach salad, green lemonade, shamrock cookies, new england boiled dinner, carrot cake, irish soda bread, egg salad, and i made molasses guiness bread, which turned out to be just like brown bread so it wasn't worth the $4.00 can of beer... oh well. I will send and email out of shanes latest excitement out of respect to my non-hunting friends. Happy Spring everyone.

we are laughing at this photo because today i burnt my upperlip and i told shane i looks like i have been botoxing, then we downloaded these pictures, and in my mumbling under my breath at shane with the camera my bottom lip is looking a little plump. anyway this is me waiting for my morning cup of java

here they are they have lived through the transition, all the way from fairbanks... so now i can name them. one has a big black stripe like a mowhawk, one has a brown nose and tipped tail, the one who just now is swimming funny has white tips, anyway yes they are probably just feeder fish, but not to me! oh mom yeh i've rearranged at least 4 times since youve left...

In following the christian calandar, (and somewhat modified for my location, which appears to be the only reason why different denominations celebrate things slightly different) The Eve of the 12th night marks the end of the remembrance of the birth of Jesus Christ, the coming of Creator God into the midst of the human family, but marks the begining of new season, called Epiphany.

The Biblical basis for the Epiphany is in Matthew 2:1-11. It is the part of the Christmas story where the wise men, Magi, or scholors from a distant land, travel to present gifts to the King born, marked with "his star in the east", and they worshiped him.

-The term epiphany means "to show" or "to make known" or even "to reveal."

- it remembers the coming of the wise men bringing gifts to visit the Christ child, who by so doing "reveal" Jesus to the world as Lord and King.

-This act of worship by the Magi, (or wise men) which corresponded to Simeon’s blessing that this child Jesus would be "a light for revelation to the Gentiles" (Luke 2:32), was one of the first indications that Jesus came for all people, of all nations, of all races, and that the work of God in the world would not be limited to only a few. So last night we celebrated, with a feast of King Crab, (given to us by christian family) and enjoyed with our christian brother and sister john and allyson. I didn't bake a Kings Cake but we enjoyed a rich cheese cake instead, (also supplied by close friends, thank you.)

We also celebrated the life of another Wise Man, my uncle john. He too with his life seeked the Lord, gave his life as his gift to Jesus.

so if you make it to cold bay for a visit, as with all of our guest you can see everything there is to see here in one afternoon GIVEN ITS A CLEAR DAY so we did just that with our guest, at the begining of the month. out to outermarker, about 8 miles to the north

isaac posted this photo on his face book, this is when he was here last year, and i was just thinking about him... it was a friday night and he and i were just sitting down to pizza, and we could see the smoke from isanoski (thats spelled wrong but i don't have time to look it up sorry) anyway the smoke was illuminated by the setting sun it looked like a neon light really cool, these are the times i wish i had my camera and big lens.. and issac back... miss you couz

about a year and a month later, believe it or not i've missed several much better sunsets but there is the good old volcano steaming just at the horizone to the right of the post office bulilding.

so the south winds i was talking about blow up all sorts of piles of treasures onto the cold bay beach, check out this deformed (healed) starfish, oyster shells, seaglass, a mug..and several pieces of it over a couple of football fileds away, ( i thought that was neat) and always lots of black fine sand...

Maine Tuff

Pam sent me a wreath from maine, i really didn't think it would survive..... it is on the south side of the house so it is protected from the north winds...

But meraculously it survived, 2 weeks of steady south winds, in the 30mh with gust up to 50mph, not a single item has flown off!!! wow now thats Maine Tuff, thank you Pam. i miss working at the green house so much this time of year, my fingers are thanking me, but my heart misses the smells and the festive feeling.

HOPE

1st week of 4 leading up to Christmas. i'm thinking alot about the word HOPE.

What got me started was the book VELVET ELVIS, Rob Bell. Great book by the way. Well the final chapter is DIFFICULTY, SUFFERING, AND HOPE. I just can't seem to shake these thoughts on hope. Hope is a word used loosly at christmas time,..faith hope and love... I tried to think of times when i've really experienced hope... not the moment when your thinking oh man i really hope "fill in blank" is the outcome. Hope is the feeling i get after i've been unexpectedly encouraged, loved, or delighted. not once i'm looking back on it, but right there in the moment.

Rob Bell talks of it as, "the kind of hope that comes from staring pain and suffering right in the eyes and refusing to believe that this is all there is." so at christmas time how do we give this gift of hope?

mom and dad made it home to Maine, late at night they arrived, but who greeted them with a late night visit? Their grandkids! Dan didn't wait to come see them the next day, after school.. but right then! I wonder what feelings they felt? and how they might discribe them? Dan did the same thing to me when i was moving to alaska, he drove to our house unexpectedly at 3:30am to drive with us to the airport, it was just what i needed to know he supported me in moving a million miles away and I knew his love for me was deep enough to stay just the same, no matter what. Hope. that things will work out, you can see things in a different light, change is possible, one of our favorite sayings...stranger things have happened...

how i feel when i here from friends and family dispite really tough situations, God is Good, there for life is good. Could it be Hope was brought to them in order for them to be able to share this? and for it to be possible? Rob Bell said "It is in the flow of real life, in the places we live and ove with the people we're on the journey with, that we are reminded it is God's world and we're goingto be okay.

...arrived in anchorage.. wow cell phone works...back to the real world and real road system.... Cold Bay, Shane, Molly, and Ralphie miss you already.

a trip to king cove our neighboring village for the weekend , below the two houses going up the hill is the church you may just be able to make out the steeple. such a pleasure to be able to visit with christian family, we were also able to go to church on sunday and worship and sing which was such a treat! the weather had picked up over night and we woke up to a winter storm, not that the wind hadn't woken me several times in the night. but hoovcraft couldn't run in the high winds, so we got to stay a bit longer and spend more time with the Lanhams.

we walked all over town, being late in the season and the fact that 3 problem bears just the week before had been delt with we were fairly safe. toured the cannery PeterPan they just finished their King Crab Season, these are some crab pots, Shane was glad to see his favorite crab boat that is on the tv show deadliest catch, time bandit, and we found a small fishing vessel in the harbor called the miss molly, on monday we planned to return to cold bay on the hovercraft but, they had maintenance problem due to the ice, so we were able to catch a ride on the crab vessel the Denali, a longer ride but we watched a movie and a half on the large flat screen in galley. that was fun. Mom was a little leary,(and everyone else for that mater) of the climb out of the boat onto the dock, which is a metal ladder covered in ice, and the reach and climb off the edge of the boat is interesting to say the least.

so these photos don't show how beautiful out it was this evening and right now under this wonderful full moon.... the farmers almanac said it is the beaver moon a time when trappers set their traps before things freeze up to much, and funny but that was just what got us out tonight to check some traps.... shane has a new hobbie this winter, and i will have a new craft, (fur winter gloves)

we are back to our favorite hike...walking the izembek lagoon now that the bears are "gone", this picture shows "someone" walked the beach within 6 hours before us...

check out the brant, geese, and emperor geese out in the lagoon, this is what we are known for all the geese that migrate here to feed.

mom found two glass fishing balls, mikey found a bouy, not chewed by the bears, i picked up hunters trash, seeds for my yard, and a few rocks worth saving..

Not only that i enjoyed reading it while shane fished in the rain and i waited in the truck till the fish were striking and enjoyed reading it on the tundra while soaking in the sunshine and waiting for geese to come visit shanes decoys.

Today is very windy rainy and very cold so i'm home, not feeling like sewing today, although the weather is foul (which is perfect hunting conditions for hunting water fowl), i chose to stay home. Now what to read, visited all my blogs i follow... i've started several different books over the past month and just haven't gotten into them.... any suggestions?

Dad enjoyed his 60th birthday hunting, and a dinner party with his choice of caribou and moose meat for dinner. i embarassed him with a fun gift! an alaskan jock strap, fur in front and a fur tail in back! he wouldn't let me post the photo of him modeling it over his new birthday clothes either, a new llbean riverdriver shirt and new cargo pants in the waist size he's proud of...
Shanes birthday they also spent hunting!!! They had the best day,
And to end the day we went to the Ducks Unlimited banquet dinner, had the best time working the auction and i even won a gun in the last man standing, here i am modeling it for shane.
Another Sunday relaxing on the tundra soaking in some sun.
And to complete the week a great reminder of Gods Promises to us... Jeremiah 29:11 My plan for your future has always been filled with hope.

Sunny and no Wind!!! not a typical day in Cold Bay

What a beautiful evening. Headed right out to the tundra after work. Shane with his decoys, for a hopeful chance to bring in some geese, and i with a berry bucket! We even left the hot blueberry buckle right on the kitchen counter....sunshine even beats that!

Lots and lots of moss berries, mom loved the cranberries, which weren't anyway near as abundant and fairly small. It's fun seeing mom all decked out in camo... here she is blending in.

Shane did get a little hunting in and Dad carried them proudly.

Today is Mason, our nephews birthday. This final photo is our preserves to date. In honor of Mason and our thankfulness to the Lord for provisions, and the gift of loved ones. Happy Birthday, kiddo we love you.

Berry Picking in fall rains

Berry Picking today with, mom (middle) Mary, and Lecretia. Dispite the rain we enjoyed the walk, and occasional strawberry along the paths. Picked blueberries on the banks of Russel creek. Mom enjoyed the sounds of the river, much better than picking at a farm. With my berry picking patience i decided if i were to make a bottle of blueberry wine it would be worth thousands. Once home Shane suggested making my moms famous family recipe, blueberry buckel. Couldn't believe i hadn't thought of that. I would have pushed to pick more... The guys weren't succesful in their hunt for geese. 2 flocks of emporer geese landed with thier decoys. Kinda funny, they can't shoot those! Shane still loves to watch them come in and land and here their chatter. Left over home made new england beans for dinner, with imported home made relish from michelle in south carolina, and we are off to church tonight. shane hopes to try his luck at fishing tonight after... oh and i almost forgot the most amazing sound of the day!!!!!!!! We came home to a message on the answering machine!! Grace, Cody, and Trevor each saying hi to each of us and they love us and miss us!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!

what i'm reading

The Shack, by William P. Young. Finished several weeks ago and can't stop thinking about it. Passed it on to my mom who couldn't set it down as well. After reading it we had to travel to Florida, for a family emergency, and all over the news down there was the case of a little girl lost possibly killed by her own mother, anyway i couldn't help but think of this book and how real and deep the pain is of loosing a daughter, sibling, or child. Most of all in my quest to learn to love Christ more, i learned in greater depth how intimate and diverse our relationships with our Lord, our Creator, and our Counselor, can be. A MUST READ.
